Ghent Area Ministry (GAM) began assisting those in need in Norfolk in August 2000 as an outreach of neighbor congregations in Ghent who desired to meet the needs of the poor, distressed, and homeless, both singles and families, who approached them with frequency. Centralizing the services under one name and direction resulted in the formation of GAM.
Ghent Area Ministry (GAM) is a local faith-based ministry called to serve impoverished and homeless people in the Norfolk community through caring and advocacy. We do this because it is Just.
To be a community ministry of sharing and advocacy for the people of Norfolk through:
Faith - We live out our faith in action.
Justice - We advocate justice for all people.
Accountability - We are good stewards of our resources.
Respectful Relationships - We serve all persons as we want to be served, with compassion and confidentiality.
Assisted Sustainable Development - We work to help others help themselves; we offer a hand up, not a hand-out.
